Week 2 Tuesday & Wednesday

Sorry for the long wait for the next instalment, we've been super busy! More updates & & photos coming soon...
Tuesday
We awoke to another early start with breakfast at 6am. Then we journeyed to the school once again by bus and ferry where we taught our subjects in English as usual. After that we had lunch at the usual restaurant on the island. Next we went back to the school and played football with the students on their school field, girls vs. boys then England vs Cambodia girls. Following these intense, sweaty matches we went on to play some other games such as a Cambodian version of duck duck goose and a traditional Cambodian game. We had 2 teams in lines facing each other (each person was numbered) and when your number is called you have to run to the middle, grab the stick and run back to your team before getting tagged by the plate on the opposite team. We also played tug of war and skipping. After playing games with the children we got on the bus and headed to an art school in Phnom Penh to watch a traditional Cambodian dance show, after the wonderful performance by the students at the school we wear invited to have a go ourselves to try and dance one of the dances which turned out to be harder than expected as the students made it look so easy. After our dancing we headed to the restaurant Friends and we visited the shop afterwards too. Finally we headed back to the hotel and to bed after a fun and tiring day.
Wednesday
On Wednesday we had the usual start to the day and made our way to the school. We were all very tired! We taught topics such as British culture, greetings and shopping. Then we had lunch at our usual restaurant on the island. We went back to the school to finish as much painting as we could with help from lots of the school children which was fun. We also made good progress with the concrete path. We now needed to add small stones to make it stronger as construction traffic will be passing over this section, we will all be coming home much stronger after all the carrying we have been doing! We looked like we had rolled in the paint and concrete by the end of the afternoon! Back at the hotel we showered before going to dinner at Lot369. We ordered food such as burrito bowls and burgers which were nice but took a while to arrive. However, whilst we were waiting a rat was by our table and some of us screamed. It came back...bad idea! A man working there grabbed the rat by the tail and flung it into the road, it lay there for a while and just as it started to move, it got run over by a tuktuk! We held a vigil for the rat, got dessert (brownies - so good!) then went back to the hotel for bed.

  3. Hi Isabelle

It sounds as though you are all having a fabulous time although laying the concrete path sounds hard work! You will have seen so much more of Cambodia and the culture than if you had just gone as a tourist, an amazing experience.

I look forward to you trying some Cambodian recipes at home but we'll forget about the rat part!

  6. Oh Lily, the rat scenario really made us laugh, but we can appreciate it might not have been funny at the time. It sounds as if you are really getting on with the school children and having fun as well as working hard on the CONCRETE PATH! The progress of the path is turning into a real saga - hope you get it finished. Does it need an NHBC Inspection from Daddy? Looking forward to some more pics, love M and D xx

  8. Is it wrong that I thought of the scene in the Witches when I read about the rat in the kitchen....

Glad you are all progressing with the school building and concrete path laying, it does sound like you are all making such a difference to the school.

Look forward to maybe one or two more updates before you all make your journey back home to your waiting families.

Stay safe and keep making memories.
